Updated Aviary pics.
« on: April 25, 2010, 06:34:53 PM »
I`ve been doing some more work on my Aviary and thought i`d show you some new pics....

First of all i have been adding new toys and things to keep them entertained

I have also spray painted the mesh with non toxic Matt Black paint, this takes away the appearance of the mesh, notice the difference between the top half of the panels compared to the bottom which have yet to be painted.

The bottom half is yet to be finished and the mesh over the wood needs to be restained, But just by painting the mesh it almost makes it invisible.

Thats a very nice Chipmunkery but do you have a safety catchment area as you go in the door?   It looks to me as if the door goes straight into the Chipmunk area.  I would strongly advise you to make a "safety pod" if there isn't one as the little darlings will be out before you know it!  If you have already got one then you can slap me on the wrists and buy me some glasses !  :icon_biggrin:

That's a lovely big aviary. But I agree with Dayle that a safety porch is an essential part of any aviary. I also noticed that the top is completely open to the elements. Have thought of partially roofing it to give the Chippies some respite from the weather?

Hi, thats a great aviary and i think they will love the branches and shelves. I agree with Dayle and Barry though that it would be best to have a safety entry door, i have one and it is probably the most important part of the structure, without it i think i would have lost most of my Chips. Bailey and Asriel go straight over to the door when i come in the garden so there would be no way i could get in without them escaping, even if they are at the other end of the aviary by the time i would have opened the door they would be there, they are so quick.

I hope you don't feel we're "picking holes" in you lovely aviary  :notworthy:..It's just we don't want you to lose any of your Chippies when they go in their new home.   Like Jenny said the safety area is properly the most important part...I would have lost some of mine if it wasn't for that bit....including my beloved Fidget   :nono:

Love the aviary, fantastic work.
I would like to ask the same question how approx much did it cost you and how long did it take to build.
It looks fab, I wish I was a chipmunks. It's a chipmunk mansion.  :icon_bounce: :icon_bounce: :icon_bounce:

I wish I had the space to build one that big. I'm itching to extend mine but I don't think the wife would appreciate it  :disgust:

If you look on the left hand side you`ll see a board fixed to the side, this is going to be the inside area like a small shed this will measure 7` tall x 4` long and the width will be the same as the front door. This leaves me with 3` from the front of the shed to the door which will be meshed off to make my entry pod.

The total cost of this build is around the £200 mark, much cheaper than buying one. The build takes around 3 days 1 day of that is waiting for the cement base to dry.

The top of the Aviary is completely covered with corrugated plastic roofing with mesh below it`s hard to see because of the light, as with plastic roofing it can get very hot in the summer so i have a roll of Heather screening which i roll over the roof on hot sunny days.

Well answered!!!  The only thing wrong with it is that it's not in my garden.

Yeah yeah I'm jealous.

I'll get over it.

That's a fab looking aviary! Well done you!  :hello2:

I was thinking of painting my wire mesh black. A friend of mine suggested it to me. They work at our local zoo & they said that all of their exhibits wire is painted black so that the public can see the animals better. What paint did you use?  :icon_flower:

 :icon_thumleft: That's a Beauty!  :icon_thumleft:

I love seeing what we can all come up with to meet the needs of our little buddies.

I like the idea of painting the mesh black. When I visited London zoo, they had black coated mesh. It did appear to detract your eye from it.
Well done on a great build.
