Cut Chipmunk
« on: November 11, 2008, 02:51:18 PM »
We got two new chipmunks last week and when we got home last night we noticed the usually really active chipmunk (Nip) had a cut / gash behind her front arm. After checking the branches to make sure it wasnt that we thought it may of been her sister, maybe a small playful fight do you think this is possible as they are sisters?  I spoke to my vet today who advised that we shld keep an eye on her and if she starts to not sure the arm to take her in to see him, but as you can imagine we are worried about her!

Most chips will fight in fun no matter what relationship they have.
It could be a small nick from a piece of mesh that you don't kow about but as long as the wound is not pouring of blood she will heal it herself very quickly.
if worst comes to worst and they are really fighting then you may have to seperate them.
CHIPMUNKS;LIKE ALL ANIMALS ARE FOR LIFE NOT JUST FOR FASHION STATUS.

We took her to the vets this morning, thank god we did she needs stitches poor little girl. So she is having those today and we are going to keep her separate from her sister for a couple of weeks just to make sure she heals.

Ahh bless her.  Keep a close eye on her.  We had a chippie that tore it's leg on a stray piece of mesh.  It started to heal brilliantly but then it obviously aggravated him and he chewed at it really badly.

Get well soon little one.

Hmmmm I'm sure chips are resilient little creatures so don't think on the negative side of things. I'm sure Nip will be ok and even if she chews the stitches out in a couple of days it will have given the wound a head start in healing. Keep us posted on her progress and best wishes to her full recovery

I'm afraid little nicks and cuts are nearly unavoidable, mostly they're just minor. But the one good thing about chippies is they heal and recover very quickly. As a standby when you next visit the vet or pet shop have a look around for some animal ointment you can keep for when you do spot a small cut.
My chips had stitches after their opps, but I didn't have to take any of them back for the stitches to be removed as they were the dissolving type. But I guess it depends on what's being stitched what type thread they use. Mine all recovered super quick so the future looks bright for little Nip

Hi Guys,

The vet I had my chippie castrated at put internal stitches that dissolved but used tissue glue on the outside so that there was nothing for little smokey to get hold of if he wanted to chew. The wound healed within days  ;)
