enough calcium?
« on: November 07, 2008, 02:26:02 PM »
hello from the adirondack mountains of new york state! i havea  question about my chippies diet...i read about MBD and decided she doesnt get enough calcium(probably) so i decided to try what i first raised her on...good ole 1/2 and 1/2 and baby cereal...and lo and behold she still loves the stuff..so i think i may have solved my calcium woes.... on a typical day(today for example) her 24 hour diet consists of: pommagranates, grapes, spinich leaves, peaches, pineapple, and fresh peas, as well as, sweet potatoes(baby food) and as i said the baby cereal and milk. is this compatible with good health? she also has almonds.brazil nuts, filberts,(in the shell) and a variety of other seeds and nuts...at all times...so im looking for a verdict...is this diet good? she has a salt lick too...and in season i give her lilac blossoms...dandelions....crab apples...blackberries....etc) thanks for reading this book! juli
i love my chippie!

It was an epic  :D
Only kidding! Your chippie gets fed very well. I would never of thought about giving them baby food. Thats very inventive.
I'm growing blackberries for mine, and blueberries. So hopefully they will like them.
What's a salt lick? It sounds minging  ;D

Hi,

I feed mine blackberries and blueberries all the time and they love them. I also give them cranberries and raspberries. Unfortunately I dont grow my own but maybe in the future. The fruit they love the most is pomegranate and grapes. They also eat strawberries but not so often.

I have recently put in a cuttlefish since reading one of the posts, They had a nibble on the first day but dont seem that bothered by it now. They dont eat veggies very often but will eat raw sprouts and broccoli.  ;D

Don't go down the cooking route, I nearly did but I think I got away with it. If you do she will be very happy, and you will spend all your life pandering to her. I tried cooking chestnuts because I thought they would be too hard for the little dears, then in the nick of time I came to my senses. It's bad enough I'm cutting grapes in half, chipmunks seem to take the easy way out if you're a mug like me and let them.  :-[

There is no greater sight than a chips backside disappearing inside a melon.
I have often cut a hole into a small water melon or honeydew and just left it on the aviary floor.
I also have a lvery large drill used for making holes in doors for handles but find it good for drilling into coconuts, when they have finished with it i use it to pack in lard and nuts and seeds for the birds in winter.
CHIPMUNKS;LIKE ALL ANIMALS ARE FOR LIFE NOT JUST FOR FASHION STATUS.

Is it ok to leave the pips in the melons as that sounds like a great treat for them ?

Yep it sure is, melons, pumpkins, all squashes, in most cases it's only the pips they are after.

Was thinking, what a great photo that would make. The photo I'm after is trying to capture a chippie in flight, as in jumping from one branch to another, only got blurred tails so far  ::)

Hi Juli,

Sorry the reply is late..... Yes I give the cranberries raw, like Nate says you can go a bit too far if you start doing too much. I have just tried mine on strawberry yoghurt as someone suggested...... They didnt eat it, just stepped init then climbed all over me!! ;D Good job I like strawberry yoghurt lol. The only thing I cook is boiled egg, but they dont eat it that often anyway.

Tried oranges, they just got a sniff and then left them. But I think others on this forum have chipmunk which like oranges. Oranges are safe food to give, general the food to avoid in large quantities are green leaves like lettuce. A good indicator is to check on her droppings, just to make sure they are solid and not runny.

I tend to give my little satsuma segments.  They love 'em.

If they don't like the yoghurt - try a different flavour  ;D - mine particularly like peach !!!

Mine love oranges and cant get enough of them.
I have tried mine with natural yogurt because I worry about the sugar thats in the flavored ones and they hate it.
I give mine Mascapone cheese with strawberries in them and they love it (just like myself) so mine really to have expensive taste lol. ;D

Mine like oranges too but in moderation. I tend to swap and change the fruit I feed them so that they dont get too bored with it. Mine also have apples, grapes, strawberries, cranberries, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries, but they love pomegranate the best. ;) I also give them cherries and plums but take the stones out first.
