Fighting !
« on: February 10, 2012, 02:12:49 PM »
I have a male and 2 females in a cage together. They have been together in the same cage for around 5-6 months without any trouble before.

But recently I noticed the male has been fighting with the females. One female has had it's tail taken off and the other has been scalped !

I thought this was a good mix to have in a cage together, so I'm a bit confused as to why the male has suddenly changed and attacked the female.

The cage is big enough and they are well fed. Any other ideas ?

Do you allow them freedom to roam around the room they are in Free range style? It helps if they can explore more than just their everyday surrounds. It is also the time of year when hormones kick in for both male and female he could be rather over amorous and dominant. I know you say also that you have 2 females and one male but are you positive about their sex? It is possible to make a mistake when they are only 6/8 weeks old which is when I suspect you got them.  :toothy4:

Have you got places for them to hide? I bought what are supposed to be cocoon type nests for birds, but make great chipmunk hideaways as only a small hole in and room for one.   I've two males so its handy for them as they are out of sight and can maintain a defensive position.
