Do you have a place for them to pee, like sawdust in a takeaway box?  What do you have as flooring?

Re Pee. I put kitchen foil in the corner of the tray where they pee and put wood chip cat-litter on it. You only need about hlf a cup full and it soaks it all up no trouble and little or no smell.

Ive had my first chippies a few weeks now and so far no smell, this has been confirmed by visitors. I started with a tray in the corner with sawdust in but they tended to flick it out everywhere so i bought a bird bath off ebay which seems to solve that problem as its enclosed. If you see any droppings just pick them up and put them in their toilet so they know where to go

iver cleaned mine out properly just once and i havent had to change the sawdust in their toilet. infact i think they save up their poo for when i let them out their cage for an hour as it seems to get everywhere lol

I like the tin foil idea with the kitty litter.  I am going to try that.

I noticed the smell is bad in my cages because Remy and martyn will go almost anywhere and Lilly goes in her wheel.  I bought huge corner litter boxes for Remy and Martyn which are made for rabbits.  It has helped a bit.

I also noticed that the urine smell is bad when it is hot and humid.  Once the weather gets cooler here on the eastern mid-atlantic area of the US, the smell seems to get better.
