Types of chipmunk
« on: March 25, 2009, 01:28:46 PM »
Hi

I know this might sound daft to all you chipmunk experts out there but: could someone please explain the different types of chipmunk there are. I believe I read somewhere that there are 26 'varieties'. Am I right in assuming there are 2 types in the UK, the brown and black striped ones and the white ones?

I looked up Agouti but that looks more like a rat type rodent than a chipmunk!

Thanks

John

Hi John, the agouti bit refers to the colour of the normal black/brown Chip although your right there is a rodent called an Agouti. Most Chips in this country are Siberian Chipmunks, the whites and cinnamons are just different colours of the Siberian. All but one of mine are Eastern Chipmunks from North America, quite rare in this country. Mike.
