Author Topic: Willow's babies born 23rd April 2011 (Read 2032 times)

Willow's babies are now 6 days old. Willow my Agouti female mated with Nugget my Cinnamon male 23rd March and after a 31 day pregnancy Willow gave birth. Willow was looking quite small while pregnant so i expected a litter of about four but then only a few days before having her babies she got big and was about the same size Hermione and Lottie were when pregnant. Monday i got my first look at the litter due to one baby falling out of the nest i decided to check them all. I was looking at the seven babies and thought some look different. There was four which looked like Lottie's did same age, they had the dark eyes and black on nose but then there was three which looked much lighter. These babies had light grey eyes and just the slightest hint of a light stripe on nose, they reminded me of my early Cinnamon babies but i wasn't sure. The third day the four darker babies were getting grey heads, the light babies they got a light colour on the head . Day four the dark babies were getting greyer and the stripe on nose was more black and the claws began to go black. The light babies not much change, claws stayed white. Yesterday the fifth day the dark babies continued to get darker and on the light babies the stripe on the nose darkened slightly to a brown. Today six days old the four babies i'm sure are Agouti are getting darker on their backs. The light babies backs stayed pink not really much change but i'm now quite sure they are Cinnamon.

We have three boys and four girls.

Weights 25th April -

They were all 5g apart from one boy who was 4/5g.

that looks like you've got a mixed litter there, but wat i thought were dilutes, unless its the lighting the lighter ones could be cinns

as they still look quite dark round the eyes but not as dark as the agoutis (if you get wat i'm saying)

but theyre very cute

Yes i see what you are saying i thought the light babies eyes were lighter than Agouti eyes but darker than Dilute eyes.

Willow's babies were one week old yesterday, all seven are getting fur and stripes, the light babies have the faintest hint of stripes appearing its very exciting. If it wasn't for the fact i can now see stripes on the light babies i would of thought they could possibly be Dilute's, it was only really the stripe they had on their nose when i first saw them that made me think they might be Cinnamon since i don't remember my Dilute's having a stripe.

Look like they're cinnamon to me Jenny. Here's Lily's litter for comparison...Nugget is one of these but don't ask me which one!

Thanks Dayle for the picture of Lily's litter, Willow's babies which were 8 days old yesterday, the light ones are looking that apricot colour. Lol i can't tell my babies apart that age either. Of course poor Bailey was also one of those babies, its hard to believe he and Nugget once looked like that

All soooo cutre, our litters are between 1-2 weeks old but no stripes or fur yet

daren't go in and find them in all the bedding though lol

Thanks. I wonder if one or both of your litters are Dilute, they don't get stripes that age they appear after the fur comes in but you would see white fur. All my babies the fur started appearing about 6 days firstly on the head. The Agouti and Cinnamons the stripes appeared also about 6 days but the Dilute's it was closer to two weeks old.
Dilute's are born all pink while Agouti have dark eyes and a black stripe down the nose, after 4 days they start getting grey heads.

It is difficult to show the colour accurately, depending which camera i use the colour can look different.

The Cinnamon babies yesterday were starting to get brown stripes, when the stripes first came in they were a light grey while the Agouti's were a darker grey. One of the girls has lighter colouring, i remember that happened with Sandie my first Cinnamon female's litter, her babies were all Cinnamon but all varied slightly in shade of colour, one was quite dark.

Willow's Agouti's are getting face stripes.

Silly me, yes they are dilutes, but I wasn't sure if they would have the dilute 'striping' as a baby or not .....lol x

Yes i wondered the same when i had my first Dilute babies last year but i noticed the Dilute's stay pink for longer than Agouti babies. My Dilute's started getting fur at 6 days and then about 12 days very faint stripes appeared (they are sort of flesh coloured at first then gradually darken as they get more fur) so they do have them as babies but slightly older babies than Agouti. Its very interesting for me to watch Agouti's grow up since i've not had baby Agouti's at all before.

Thanks, yes its fantastic to have some Cinnamon's especially since at first it looked like i wouldn't get any. I thought Lottie was going to have a few but when she didn't i thought thats it i won't get any now as i was sure Willow would have all Agouti because i was sure she didn't carry the Cinnamon gene but now i must of mixed the females up since she must carry the gene. It was really Nutkin (the female i thought carried the gene) i wanted to breed, i only mated Willow because Nutkin didn't come into season but now i'm so pleased i did breed Willow because probably Nutkin and Nugget wouldn't have Cinnamons. When i got both females i knew one carried the gene i just mixed up which one.

The babies are all getting very fine fur on the tails, it looks white or silvery. The Cinnamon's are also getting face stripes. Most of the fur on Willow's babies is on their heads at the moment, the heads are very furry their backs just have a fine down.

Jen -

You get mixed up? I can't believe it, no way! You are so organized and meticulous.

With all these babies and chippies running around, you need a database to keep track of everything. A paper journal just will not cut it!
