After a bit of advice..
« on: March 08, 2009, 10:17:14 AM »
Hi all, first off great site. Reading all your posts has been really helpfull.
I bought two chipies on Friday, a boy and a girl  both aged 12 months, they are from the same breeder and shared the same habitat.
My concern is that since i got them home the female seems quite happy to roam around , eat and drink etc but the male stays in the nestbox. He has come out twice, once to have a quick mooch and the second time he went to feed. He was eating for a while when the female came down and chased him and tried to bit him. He quickly returned to his nestbox. I'm worried as i have not seen him drink yet. He seems very alert and healthy though.
I know females can be more aggressive and it seems she has claimed the territory. When the female goes to bed she shares the same box as the male and they sleep together with no problem. I have got 3 boxes in there so they don't have to share but they seem happy when in the box together. Just worried about the male.

Lots of views and no replies so I will say that i hope it is all sorted out now. We have had males and females together and they got on fine. The males were more agressive in 'season' and females more agressive when pregnant and generally in charge of nest boxes etc but any tensions only lasted a few days and then they got on fine. They've always had space to get away from otehrs.

I'm sure it will sort out soon. maybe he's just a shyer creature

Hello tower,

I agree with casxyz, If they have already lived together before, then maybe he is just taking longer to settle. and he is probably out more than you realise, coming out when nobody is around. How are things with him now? Mine live out side so they do there own thing all day and sleep quite early at the mo, Not sure if this is the same with indoor chips. But animals as well as humans can all take to change differently.

I hope that all is well and you let us all know how things develop, lots of new chip owners on here will have the same questions and worries, so your not alone.

Sarah.

Hi Tower welcome to our chipmunk forum  :hello2:

i hope your male is getting out of the nest more, it can't be too bad for him if the female is choosing to sleep with him at night.

i don't know if you were able too do this, but it can be a great comfort to next chipmunks if the breeder of shop will let you bring them home in their nest box. It should have a supply of food in it already that they have stashed away.

Hope you're enjoying both of them now.

Thanks for the replies, very kind. Situation had not changed up until today so took the 'bully' back to the pet shop. Turns out she was a he  :dontknow:
Anyway exchanged him for another little guy and instant change! they are playing together sharing food and went to sleep in the same box tonight! So happy and relieved.

Hi tower,

Well that was a strange one! But at least you have sorted the problem out, It is quite difficult to tell their sexes when they are young, you were lucky that they still had another 1 in.  Fingers crossed the bully gets along with other chips.

now you can watch and enjoy your new friends.

let us all know how you and them get on, Have you picked names yet?

Sarah.
