looked up what you said, found if, quote, (In the Wizard of Oz, food coloring was tried, even liquid candy, both without success. The colors were too tame, and much too tasty. Finally, a paste of Jell-O powder was found acceptable.)  If you read it right it said FOOD COLOURING WAS TRIED -BOTH WITHOUT THAT IS WITHOUT SUCCESS,,, So as i said food colouring is not good, jell-o can contain natural and synthethic food colouring, i guess that they must of used natural food colouring which was contained in the jell-o, just enough to obtain the colour for the film, All that i was pointing out is that synthethic is not as safe to use as natural, and that the numbers that i put were considered not safe, also food colouring has a use by date,

If you are worried about food colouring containing harmful additives. Speaking from experience a natural colouring like pure blackcurrant juice would work on a pale chipmunk.  Not sure how often you would have to reapply it though.

You could try a dab of gentian violet (purple) or iodine tincture (brown) - both are animal-safe antiseptics which stain skin and fur, and are readily available. Maybe mark one set between shoulders, another above tail?

Hi, thanks to all that gave their suggestions and views on marking the chipmunk. will try to mark her soon to see how long it will last before fading will try to mark near shoulders so it will be difficult to lick at, and hopefully the other male and female won't notice any difference.
