crooked teeth
« on: October 18, 2010, 08:01:15 PM »
i'v just gone to given my chips some monkey nuts, and my last baby joshua did not take one, and then he yawned and his teeth were not meeting, and growing either side of each other etremely long  :'( my poor baby. so i took him out and cut them down, he was very good while i did this, and so i give him, and the rest of them some papaya and pineapple, pear and peach (tinned) and he's tucked in nicely to them. he doesnt seem malnurished from the teeth as he always seems to be eating, and looks a healthy weight, so i'll just have to keep and eye on him and check them eery fortnight, i'm hoping that they mite straighten out a bit but i'm not holding out much hope. but i think i'm am going to have to keep this baby now as i'm a sucker for an invalid  :sign10: and he's so lovely and friendly  :icon_biggrin:
has anyone else ever experienced this?  :dontknow: i did have a rabbit with this problem which is how i know how to cut their teeth.

Whoa - who taught you how to cut their teeth - I hope you're not just using clippers as this can be extremely painful for rabbits and chippies.

If you don't have them cut correctly, it can cause them to grow even more wonky than before.

Please forgive me if you've been specifically trained but I've seen some 'amateurs' cutting teeth before and it's not nice

no when i had my rabbit the vet taught me how to do it with these clippers i have, (they are in fact just like nail clippers but thats what the vet used) and joshua was very good and they were good clean cuts of the teeth, no blood or even crying or squeaking from him (thank god)

I have done rabbits and dogs and our parrots talents and claws this way also. With the correct tool! x :icon_biggrin:

like i said he is very tame i'm not sure i would try it on my other chips, i have 3 chips that are tame like this that i could cut nails n such but i wouldnt even get near the others  :sign10: he seems quite happy now still he's sat sprawled accross the cage rite now  :icon_biggrin: but what concerned me was i'v only just noticed it though as like i say very healthy n he always seemed to eat well and never shown any signs of problems, it was only that he yawned and i could see them really clearly, i think if i hadnt noticed them now they would b e soon sticking into the roof and bottom of his mouth, as they were over growing in both directions, they are totally missing each other so the top teeth are growing down to the left and his bottom teeth are growing up to the right, so they are like side by side when closed (like 4 teeth in a row) if any of that makes sense  :dontknow:

It sounds like what Pearl had, hers misaligned

Do you have any idea how your Chipmunk may have done it?

i'm not sure maybe he was born like that or like us maybe he grinds his teeth while sleeping or he's been positioning his mouth funny when sleeping or resting and they've just deformed,  :dontknow: i hope they do straighten again, but they are quite slanted that they may not straighten, but as long as he can eat and is healthy and happy i'll still love him  :icon_biggrin: it will just make him all the more special  :love3:

I'm afraid this again is wrong information - what you're describing is called trancing and is incredibly stressful for rabbits.  They don't fall into a sleep, they are extremely stressed and therefore 'freeze' until they are put the right way again.

If you google 'trancing' you will see that it's very bad practice.

It's scares me sometimes what goes on  :(

i never did my rabbits teeth while on his back and neither did the vet, one to hold and one to cut but he was upright, and my joshua was also upright in my hand.
