Firstly, wow, what a fantastic site - wish I'd found this before now! We adopted 3 chipmunks from a big pet shop and have been told they are boys (but have no idea how old they are!). We have had them for a few months now and only see one of them as the other two are still hiding from us. Meal worms have worked a treat with Charlie, he even takes them from me through the wires.

I am worried about the other two though. I hope they will eventually get used to us being in the same room as them - we hear them running about when we are upstairs but never see them.

I'm also worried about the info about the fact we have 3 boys - I hope we won't have to separate them as they get older! But at the moment there doesn't seem to be any problems. fingers crossed.

Anyway - going to put a lot of the info found here into practise and see how we get on - thank you !

Hi Rhi

Thanks very much for your praise, glad you found the site useful, it encourages me to get on and get the site finished.

You're not the only one with very shy chipmunks, given you've had your for a few months now I think you can say they have got settled in. I think the boys hiding in the nest will get used to you, but I find it can take ages. My chipmunk Izzy would run and hide from me every time I came in the room. He's a year old now, and last week he actually jumped on my shoulder, not for long though. What helped tame him this far was him being let out, he's one of two I've got which are painfully shy. Tucker is my other one, he was spending nearly all day in his nest box, but now he will come out and watch from a shelf in his aviary. He is going to be hard work as he shows no interest in wanting to come out for a run.

Having three boys could be a problem in the future you may need to separate them as they get older. I really thought that brothers from the same litter would be OK, but not always. All my male chipmunks need to be watched when they are in the same room running around, and all of them have to have their own aviaries. If left alone and together, there would be a fight, which can be fatal. The only exception I had was Pickles and his brother Arthur, who could tolerate each other. It will be interesting to see what happens with your three boys, it could make a difference that you don't have any females. No females could mean they won't be so territorial with each other.

Thanks for your reply, I've already made progress... I decided to let Charlie out for a run about and he came onto my hand before running down the side of the cage. I was a little concerned about getting him back in and so had my cardboard tube at the ready (thanks for the tip!) but there was no need to worry as he had a little sniff, ran back up into the cage and into his nestbox, enough excitement for one day! Bless him.

I am a little concerned about the size of the cage that was given to us by the pet shop. It was where they were living before they came to us though, and pets at home kept them in it and told us it was fine.. I would love to be in a position to buy/build something really large for them but unfortunately I'm not at the moment. The cage is a Ferplast cage and its about 3ftx3ftx5ft ish. I would love to know more about everyone else's living arrangments! (and maybe get some advice)

xxx

Personally i don't think your aviary is too small, your chipmunks are young, and two of them are not very active yet. It can be a good thing to have brought them home in the aviary they had been living in without the need for them to move in to a new aviary, less stress. All my chippies like height, so if you do get round to building your own aviary and you have room, go floor to ceiling. When mine take a break most like to rest on a high shelf, so the view the whole room.

A few people criticise getting a pet from pets shops, and there are some horrors in the UK. But I was pleasantly surprised with Pets At Home, especially being a large US owned chain. I bought my first chipmunk there, and got to speak to the women who bred him. So I got the history and some advice from her. All their pets are checked out by a vet, and kept in good size aviaries, which are cleaned regularly. Though it was probably a fluke I got to speak to that women first.

Your post did give me the idea to add another board to this forum for people to upload photos of their chipmunks and where they keep them.
