Devastating news.
« on: June 08, 2010, 03:17:00 PM »
On arriving home from work today i went outside to see my chippies and give them some Tomatoes.
After giving them out in the main Aviary i went to put some in the cage i have with the mother and 6 babies in and she didn`t come out like she normally does. This had me worried straight away, so i inspected the box and found her dead, the babies are all still alive but already looking thinner than yesterday.
I have a full time job so i can not hand rear these by myself, so i am at my wits end as what to do. Firstly i will offer these to anyone here who can put the time into giving them what they need or i will try to locate a local small animal rescue centre to see if they can help.
The babies were 3 weeks old on sunday just gone.

Any help ideas gratefully welcome.

I`m located in Winsford in Cheshire.

I am so sorry for your loss, RIP mummy chip.

If you post your location I am sure someone can help, probably best here than a small animal rescue tbh as they will be very full and most probably have never dealt with a chipmunk.

Sorry to hear your news and what a dilema its left you in.

I guess there may be someone on here willing to try to hand rear them but I guess it depends if there is any one close enough to you to take them.

For the time being there are some previous posts on here about hand rearing chipmunks with the ingredients for the food you need to mix for them. I posted a guide last year sometime for someone who's baby chips mum had died.

Here's the link to that specific post http://super-chipmunks.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,275.0.html

Good luck and hope someone can come to help in the very near future

Regards

Chris

Winsford is so close to me 'back home' house, i.e. my parents now. I'm from Crewe, if only I was up there now  :cussing:

I really would like to help but I know realistically I am too far away, feel free to contact me if no one else can help.

I'm so sorry about your female, good luck with hand rearing the babies whoever does it. I have never had to hand rear but if any of my females did die/couldn't rear babies i would try, there is always someone awake in my house and we would take on shifts but i've never done it before so would have to read up on it first and find out as much as i can.

The Squirrel Board website does give info on how to hand rear baby Squirrels which is the closest to chippies:

http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11782

A few more Squirrel Board links
baby squirrel section:
http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=87

Emergency section:

The only people i know have handreared chippies are Martyn and Sarah-jane.

I will be praying these babies make it  :love3:

Try and find a mother on here that can bring Ur babies up for u 1st... A foster mum is better for you and babies.... They will need to have 4 babies or less As too many can confuse the foster mum! DONT USE GOATS Milk!! If Ur hand rearing them go and get some formula milk for any super Market but NOT ready made stuff ! I am happy to help or advise which ever u want!

Happy to help!  :icon_thumleft:

Keep us updated on their progress.
It might be a good idea to have a post on this forum about how to handrear a chipmunk, incase this ever happens again. it does seem to becoming more common.
