Christmas trees
« on: December 31, 2008, 02:26:51 PM »
Hi All

I have a real christmas tree every year and this year did not change even though I had some new chippies.
I brought a noble pine tree and my chippies seem to love chasing each other up and down it when they come out. They like taking the tinsel and crackers off the tree to play with.
However I was thinking that in a few days when I take the tree down and before I throw the trunk out. Would it be okay to keep it and put the trunk in my chippies house, I am not sure if the tree is harmful to them or not. Does anyone know because I am not sure, my last chippie Alvin would not go anywhere near a christmas tree.

You should be fine with a natural tree. The only problem can be if they have been treated with a flame retardant spray or other chemicals to help keep there needles.

There are many types of Xmass tree sold in the UK, and I think the one you have has the softer needles.

If it has not been treated I would think you're OK with them having the trunk. I did the same one year. Avoid the needles, as they dry out the needles get ridged, and this can pose a threat to the chipmunks cheek pouches.

Genrally pine trees are in their natural habitat, which is why yours have taken to it so well.

Happy New Year everyone, as I'm off out now.
