Sugar's tail is dried and dropping off the last inch or so, she is in the house as there were issues with her being picked on in the aviary. She is happier in the house and isn't skittish anymore. I have started her on colloidal silver in her water (drinking water) today as she has a clean sore further up.....any advice gratefully received?
Ellie

Hi Ellie, Sorry to hear Sugar's been bullied  :(
Asriel's now had three bites to his tail, one last year and two this autumn, the second bite had not long healed before she bit him again. He looks sorry for himself now i had to separate them, it looks like his tail will be ok. I just keep the wound clean as best i can by spraying saline on the wound for about a week but he kept it very clean himself, it heals very quick. They seem to adapt very well to these sort of injuries. One of my past Chippies lost her full tail after a fight and it never seemed to bother her so hopefully Sugar will adapt well

Did it affect climbing at all?? She is so much happier inside and has only just learnt to eat fruit this past week bless her at 6months old. Think she will hve to be an indoor chip now cant risk putting her back x

No, Creamie was able to climb fine, she lived to be my oldest Chippie, she only had a small stump left of the tail and that didn't affect her not that i remember anyway. I found a photo of her about 2 1/2 years old and she still had the full tail so this happened after 2000. Creamie died 2006 i think. I got her in 1998 she was only my third Chip and first Dilute  :)

For now might be best to keep Sugar apart, it may be once spring arrives they will go back to living together peacefully but its unlikely the other Chips will accept her back at the moment.

Thanks Jennyb, 1/3rd fell off over night, the other bit is clean and sore but I am using colloidal silver in her water so if that helps I can use it as a spray on the wound but she is keeping it clean and I don't want to stress her by 'spraying' her x

So is there a natural type of chipmunk that has a short tail?
Or are the short tailed chipmunks in snow White and Bambi wrong?

I think they are ground squirels, either that or it was just too hard to animate fluffy tails!  :dontknow:

but the squirrels have big fluffy tails

And they definitely are supposed to be chipmunks
