Chewing help
« on: December 31, 2008, 02:15:12 PM »
Hi All

Can anyone help or suggest anything to me. I keep having to buy new things for my chipmunk house every week because Chip (the male I have) keeps chewing everything and strips what every I put in the house within a day.
I am having to buy new ropes every two/three weeks because he chews them, I put cardboard tubes (which my husband gets from work for free) in every week and Chip chewed within a day or two, I put a cherry tree branch in there yesterday and already this will be in several pieces before the end of today. It is only Chip that chews everything and the two girls I have seem to be getting fed up with it, as Charlie likes furry cuddly things and I cannot put them in there because Chip chewed it to pieces within an hour.
Can anyone help because my wallet has a big dent in it and I have some unhappy chipmunks.

Try going for a walk in the woods:)
any or most tree droppings as my good lady calls them will help
that is twigs and baby branches from off the ground
CHIPMUNKS;LIKE ALL ANIMALS ARE FOR LIFE NOT JUST FOR FASHION STATUS.

Chip's on the rampage by the sound of it. And it's  shame the other two are having their toys ruined. I wonder why he feels the need to chew everything to distruction?
Apart from using hardwoods I cant think what else to use. Plastics or metal materials may be the only other option.
Would you consider housing Chip on his own? Maybe this is not practical or what you want to do?
Does he chew the mesh?

Try baking some bread until it goes rock hard.  Not as interesting perhaps but a darn sight cheaper  ;)

Many thanks for all the ideas and keep um coming they are helpful.
Cuttle bone was the first thing I put in there and within 30 mins he pulled it off the side of the cage and threw it to the floor and attacked it further.

Baking bread till it is rock hard will not be a problem for me as I can't cook anyway. :D

Chip chews the mesh, but only in the bottom of the cage under the hay. Chip has got to go and have he brakes adjusted before spring (if he can) anyway as this is also another problem and I think this maynot be helping the cause.
I cannot really house Chip on his own because my living room isnt big enough for another cage.

I also found today that he has been chewing all my aerial cables and telephone wire when he comes out for a rum around. Boy does he cost me a lot of money. I do watch them when they come out but he goes behind the radiator where the wires are and I can't get to him. Now I have no wires in the living room and this will stop the little monkey. Only thing is now what will he chew next.  ;D
